Escape room experience for mobile screen-readers
Our mission is to teach you more about screen-reader experience and have some fun doing so, even if you do not need a screen-reader.
Maybe you are a user experience designer or a web developer and want to understand more about accessibility. Then some basic experience with screen-readers is a good start.
Voice-back escape room is a simple game that you can play with your screen-reader and learn how to operate it.

You went to a modern escape room that uses tasks and riddles on your mobile phone to let you out.
Then you suddenly stumble, the phone falls on the floor and the screen on your mobile phone is broken.
Everything seems to still work, but screen is black and nothing is displayed on it.
You just remembered that you can still use the phone, but with a screen-reader.
You can still win the game and be the first to escape!
So - you will have to solve different tasks using the screen-reader. Very web oriented tasks for that matter.
For example: which table cell in the time schedule includes lunch break?
Tasks that everyday screen-reader users take for granted can be quite a challenge to non-screen-reader users.
Why not have some fun when learning how to really use the screen-reader and why are semantics and accessibility so imporant?

If you own an Android or iPhone device - chances are that your screen-reader is already installed on your device.
Mobile devices also make it harder for you to cheat, so a perfect match .
Skip and play voice-backIf you have never used a screen-reader on mobile device then you should invest some time to know the basics.
We prepared basic information to make it easier for you:
TalkBack is usually preinstalled on all Android based phones, if it's not don't worry - it can be installed for free.
Please check your phone's Settings > Accessibility menu and try to find TalkBack. If it's there you can turn it on. If it's not there please install it from Google Play (Android Accessibility Suite) and return to this page.
I suggest to enable TalkBack shortcut, so that you can turn it on and off by pressing both volume keys for few seconds. It will make your TalkBack experience way simpler. You can do it by going to your phone's Settings > Accessibility and then turn on the Volume Key Shortcut.
Then you can swipe to right to move to next item in the menu (or to left to go to the previous one). Double tap to activate a command.
If you swipe up and then down you will get the reading controls. They can help you explore the screens in multiple flexible ways, like per line, headings, links, controls and so on.
Before trying this escape room please train on your favorite and familiar sites so that you get used of using TalkBack. That way you will be much more efficient when competing against time.

VoiceOver is preinstalled on all iOS devices and you only need to turn it on to use it. The simplest way to do so is to use Siri and say "Turn on VoiceOver", but you can also use Settings menu > Accessibility > VoiceOver.
Triple-clicking side button (on iPhones with Face ID) or tripple-clicking home button (on iPhones with home button) is also possible.
VoiceOver offers so called Rotor to change navigation options and you can browse the rotor by twisting two fingers in a circle on the screen, like if you are turning a knob.
Rotor enables you to navigate by headings, links, tables, form controls and so on.
Before trying this escape room please train on your favorite and familiar sites so that you get used of using VoiceOver. That way you will be much more efficient when competing against time.

Voice-back is meant to be used with either VoiceOver (screen-reader for iOS devices) or TalkBack (screen-reader for Android devices), so please use one of them to access it.
